Hello everyone
Last week we saw the water temperature drop almost 3 dec to a chilly 16 dec as a result of the moderate N/E swell which came down the coast, straight away it shut down Beach and Offshore fishing however it looks like its already starting to pick back up with plenty of good reports now coming in. Just before the cold water there were already good catches of school Jew coming in from the Belmont / Blacksmith beach stretch , most fish were around the 2 – 4 kg mark and even a few smaller ones , all of these fish have been taken on either live or frozen beach worms , mixed in with this there have been a few Salmon and Bream just to make it interesting.
For those heading down to the rocks there are good numbers of Drummer and Trevally down towards Catherine Hill Bay / Wybung Head particularly with the cooler water and as usual prawns and plenty of burley seems to be doing the trick as for Tailor just on daylight is proving to be the best time when casting metals.
Back in the lake this weekend we will see the first prawn run of the season just on dark this Saturday night the prawn run will last all of next week which should work in well with the school holidays and with the warmer than usual winter and late change in the forecast there should be plenty of quality prawns on the move. This prawn run will kick start the Bream and Whiting season off with good numbers of fish already starting the school up on the sand flats in fact the Bream have already been there for the past month with a lot of fish around the 35-40 cm mark and most fish full of roe.
Last Saturday afternoon Patrick ( Marks Point Marksman ) and Justin ( Just in time ) Worley tried their luck for a few Flathead the boys found it a little tough at first, that was until Justin hook up to a metre plus Mulloway only to loose it after 40 mins right under the boat , not to be too disappointed the boys found a school of Tailor working the surface just on dark and managed 21 nice size fish between them before Patrick put a treble hook into his thumb ending the day with a quick trip up to Belmont hospital for a hook removal. While on Sunday I headed out with Steve Norris for a quick Flathead session, Steve released a fish around the 75 cm mark and landed another 3 while I struggled with the fishing only landing one and feeling like shit after too many drinks while watching the Knights win , I should of learnt by now.
Ive had a few reports this week of some big Kingfish turning up in the lake, my good mate Trevor Williams was almost spooled the other day by a big King while chasing Flathead these fish have been reported down as far as Pulbar island , both lures or live squid seem to be getting them interested even Patrick had a monster chase his lure up on Sunday afternoon all looks good for the next few months . Speaking of lake monsters Neil Haydon and his wife Nicole landed a 1.22 m long Flathead a few weeks ago while drifting the lake it was estimated around the 9 kg mark and after a few photos Neil released the Flathead back into the water, what a great effort well done Neil and Nicole.
Back in the channel there are a few Luderick around the sunken wall and back up around the Pelican islands seem to be holding most of the schools , while just on daylight there have been big schools of Salmon inside Lucys wall right up to the shore but as soon as the sun starts to get up they head back out around Moon island there have been a few small Kings and Tailor mixed in with the Salmon which should be on the move during the next month. For those heading out to the farm be warned there are loads of Leatherjackets around at the moment right along the 100 m line, seems the Jackets moved back in a few weeks ago as the current backed off hopefully it will only be a short stay.
Out on the Blue water scene reports have been coming in thick and fast, Jayden Bruce landed a 27kg Yellowfin on 6kg line yesterday while over the weekend there were several reports of Yellowfin up to 80kg as far up as our southern canyons while back off Sydney there have been Blue Marlin 200 kg plus , Striped marlin, Short bill spearfish and even a Wahoo mixed in with the Yellowfin Tuna and Albacore , water temp on the shelf is around 22-23 dec so dust those game reels off and lets get out there the Game season is officially now ON.
