Hello everyone
Looks like another great weekend ahead with light S/W on Saturday and out of the East on Sunday , still no rain in sight and let’s face it we certainly could do with some, it’s been the longest dry period for quite a while, but it hasn’t affected the fishing at all in fact it’s the opposite. Last weekend we had a full moon and there were plenty of catches of Mulloway throughout Lake Macquarie, both lures and baits have been working , most fish are around the 4-6 kg mark with the odd larger fish up to 12 kg. At the moment however fresh squid are a little harder to find, this should start to improve the next Prawn run which is due to start on Tuesday night , this will go right through to the first week in November , plenty of prawns for Melbourne Cup day perfect timing.
There are plenty of big Whiting gathering on the sand flats now, a lot of fish over the 40cm mark , it’s the same as previous years you can see plenty, but they just do not want to bite fortunately mixed in with the Whiting there are good numbers of Bream and if you’re using tube worms you should also manage a few Luderick they seem to like worms as much as the Bream .Pelican RSL had their weigh in on Sunday with Don Cummins catching a mixed bag of Mulloway, Flathead and Bream , John Loss managed his bag of 10 Luderick while Bruce Barsly piped everyone at the post with his lake and rock fishing catch of Mulloway, Flathead Groper, Bream and Leatherjacket winning by 0.66 grams .
It seems good numbers of Flathead can be found all over the lake at the moment with the prawn run just about to start these fish will start to head back up into the shallows and channel over the next week or so things are really starting to hot up now.
There have been a few big schools Tailor still around, both Patrick and I have had a ball spinning for them over the last month some days catching 40 plus fish , releasing those that weren’t badly hooked up and still taking a great feed home, even on the weekend there were fish seen around Fishing Point and Belmont Bay its been a long Tailor season.
Patrick and I had a quick fish on Saturday trying out the latest soft plastic lure to come out called Fish Candy these lures are around 100mm long and come in both split and paddle tail, they will be deadly on both Flathead and Mulloway , I landed a 65cm Flathead and Patrick a 55 cm plus a few Flounder unfortunately we couldn’t put too much time in but I will be putting the fish on notice this weekend.
Offshore remains fairly slow with water temperatures all over the place, the normal situation at this time of year , there are still plenty of Salmon around Moon island and down south towards Catho, while up towards Redhead Flathead and Trevally seem to be it , let’s hope it starts to pick up over the next few weeks.
On the beaches there have been a few Mulloway and Tailor of an evening while during the morning its been Salmon and Whiting at least there’s a bit of variety.
The new Mulloway laws will come into affect from the 1st November the new limit will be 2 fish over 70 cm per person no other bag changes have come in yet.
Just a short note I will be doing a Tackle Talk night at Warners at the Bay on Tuesday Night the 12th November starting at 6.30 pm all are welcome to come along it should be a fun evening, all thanks to the Charlestown Anglers and Warners at the Bay.
Regards
Jason
