Hello everyone
Finally the weather has started to warm up and already we are starting to see good numbers of whiting move back onto the sand flats , just last week there were several big schools of fish seen around Marks Point on the change of the tide , this is a very positive sign for the season ahead and by the amount of live worm enquiries we had over the weekend it seems the word is already out .
Steve Norris and myself fished on Saturday morning down towards the sunken rock area and landed 11 fish up to 77 cm , we released 4 fish over 65 cm and 3 under 45 cm only taking home 4 mid size fish for a feed while up towards Coal Point Patrick and his good mate Justin Worley managed 6 fish up to 64 cm and it seems we were not the only ones late last week Tony Bass released a 87 cm model just for good measure proving once again the benefit of releasing all the larger breeding Flathead is now paying off, all winter there have been heaps of big fish release throughout the lake thus ensuring another great season ahead .
Patrick and I fish the same area the week before and had trouble getting through the Squid , in no time we had caught 20 some were the biggest arrows I have seen they were that thick you could see them on the sounder and from all reports the increase in squid numbers has come at the right time with several Mulloway caught in the last few days most fish seem to be around the 6 kg mark however I did hear a 15 kg model down around the Pulbar Island area .
The Kingfish season is also off to a flying start with a number of Kings up to 80 cm been taken on poppers a Swansea bridge late last week I was watching one of the local fishos battling with one as I drove past its been a bit of a hot spot lately with plenty of Salmon and Tailor mixed in with them .
Offshore fishing is also on the improve water Temperature is now up to around 18 dec down south towards Nora Head there have been plenty of Kingfish taken on both live baits and jigs while back on the Farm we have had reports of good size Snapper in the deep water , back in close there have been catches of Trevally and squire from both the Dudley / Redhead and Catherine Hill Bay , Flathead are a little patchy at the moment however this should improve over the next month .
On the beaches I had a report of a bag limit catch of Whiting a week ago from Belmont / Blacksmiths stretch on preserved Yagan beach worms other than this its been a little quiet apart from the odd Salmon and Tailor , after the next moon phase should see a big improvement . Down on the rocks its Drummer time of the year with good numbers around if your’ve ever wanted to catch one now is the time fresh green prawns and plenty of burley will do the trick .
Now on another subject “sand” yes “sand” have a good look at the new mess that has been created this year by another rocket scientist who decided to put all the dredged sand on top of the big island off Marks Point , as a direct result there’s now a 20 foot high wall of sand falling back into the channel , already you can see a sand bar heading back towards the main channel at the southern end while at the northern end a shallow sand bar is almost up to the red marker as a result of the year before when that dredging which was just pump up next to the island , this along with a huge wall of sand heading towards the bridge which has covered almost all of the weed beds off Little Pelican . What a joke , one would think by now someone would of grown half a brain and realized that any sand dredged from the main channel needed to be remove totally not just dumped back in another area which has been done and will now cost more than the original job , I think its time for the media to ask a few questions before its all too late .
Regards
Jason
