Fishing Report 15.1.14

Welcome to 2014 everyone

Finally the Blue water scene has turned it on with Blue , Black and Stripped Marlin turning up along the coast , the first signs started on Friday ,and by Sunday it was in full swing with over 70 Marlin tagged , Richard Rocchi and the crew aboard Rocket managed 3 Blacks and a Stripped on Sunday , Ricks  wife Debbie battled with a Black Marlin around the 120 kg mark for 3 hours before the crew were able to tag it , rumor has it that it will be the last time Debbie will pick up a rod , who could blame her . Other boats up around the car park were having the same success with some of the gun boats tagging up to 9 marlin for the day and with the current slowing down and bait starting to stack up this year’s Big Fish game Tournament , Shoot Out and Inter Club, you need to save those browny point up boys ..

Back on the Farm reef off Swansea the Dolphin fish have turned up with fish up to 10 kg been caught on the weekend ,  Nick Zontos managed a 10 kg fish along with a few smaller ones , he also landed a few  Snapper around the 1 kg mark . All the signs are good , plenty of bait from 30 fathoms out and plenty of small Black Marlin coming down the coast , it just could be our year, fingers crossed .

Offshore water temp is back on the improve with the current finally picking up enough to move the cooler water through , already this week we are starting to see a few Trag and Bonito and Snapper up to 3 kg coming in from the close reefs , there are also plenty of Kingfish around most just under size however for those prepared to live bait either squid or Yellowtail it’s a different story with fish  over 15 kg  testing most, particularly around the bridge .

Back in the lake and channel its still the same story with good numbers of big Whiting and Bream been caught , once again live Tube worms are producing the larger fish both Patrick and I fish on Sunday for a few hours only landing 5 Whiting, but they were all good size, the biggest measuring 41cm . Jumping Johny Frith also put his boat in the water on Saturday night ( for the first time in a while ) and landed a dozen quality size Bream for his effort, not a bad way to start 2014 . Flathead have slowed up now due to the breeding season while it seems the lake squid have made a comeback with good numbers been caught, while anglers are casting lures for Flathead these squid make the perfect Mulloway or Kingfish bait fresh or frozen .

On the beaches the best Whiting season in years continues , Ben Clift and his family fished Belmont beach on Sunday night landing 18 Whiting up to 47 cm, his young son managed the biggest and it was smiles all round for the youngster . Back towards Blacksmiths we are just starting to see the first signs of Tailor season starting with a sprinkling appearing along the coast and if all things go right ,by mid February it should be in full swing .

Over the last couple of nights there have been a few Mulloway up to 15 kg landed, both Beach worms and lake squid are the pick of the baits , however as one lucky central coast angler found out the trusty salted pilchard is up to the task landing one at 8 kg and another at 11kg on the weekend .

For those still waiting, our 2014 tide charts have finally turned up ..

Regards

Jason
