Easter Fishing Report 3-4-15

Hello everyone

During the past week there has been plenty of action out on the water , Lake Macquarie in particular has started to fire up with schools of Tailor been found between Wangi and Pulbar Island , at the moment there a several groups with size varying between schools some are around the 35-45 cm mark while others are only 15-20 cm feeding with them there have also been a few Bonito and small Frigate Mackerel while around the markers it seems a few Dolphin fish have also taken up residence . Over the past 2 weeks we have had quite a few reports of these fish in the lake , Patrick and his mate Justin Worley caught 2 a fortnight ago while 2 days later Shannon also managed another one although these fish were only around the 55-60 cm mark the largest to date caught was 97 cm which would put this fish around the 6 kg mark another great catch last week was a 1.2 m Cobia which was caught off Coal Point while fishing for Mulloway .

This week it seems the Mulloway have started to fire back up as we head into the full moon again Pat and Justin landed 2 fish up to 90 cm and once again not to be showed up Shannon fish yesterday and landed a 77 and 91 cm Mulloway at 11 o’clock in the day , fresh or live lake squid are the pick however the new range of Samaki Vibelicious have proven once again to be a fish taker not only in the lake but in Newcastle Harbour as well .

Back in the channel schools of Bream have started to move in , just this week good catches have come from Salts Bay and Swansea Flats early next week we are expecting a big Westerly change with this brings the start of the Mullet season which will see big school move along the coast with this we should start to see schools of both Bream and Tailor as well , already we are seeing Tailor been caught both early morning and late afternoon even yesterday I had reports that some solid fish around the kg mark have just turned up which is just in time for the holidays .

Offshore has still been a little patchy with Tailor and Teraglin coming in from the Redhead / Mereweather area while down south around Caves / Catherine  Hill Bay its Bonito and Kingfish which are the target . On Tuesday there was a school of Long Tail Tuna off Moon Island some of the fish were upwards of 20 kg and believe it or not a couple of Spotted Mackerel which has been no real surprise when you consider the water temperature along the coast at the moment .

Out on the shelf it’s a case of Blue Marlin fever with a number of fish around the 140-160 kg mark been caught all on skirted lure , some boats have also lost a number of big fish around the 200 kg plus mark and there’s not only Marlin out wide at this time of year we start to see the big Tiger sharks come down the shelf Steve Dial and his crew managed a 350 kg beast on Sunday and you can bet it wasn’t the only one out there .

Regards

Jason
