December 2016 Report

Hello everyone

This year has certainly flown 2017 is only a week or so away and the fishing has been out of sight , the December prawn run will start tonight and run right through until the New Year , already we have seen good numbers of Bream and Whiting throughout the Swansea Channel / Lake Macquarie area . Both early mornings and late afternoons have provided plenty of surface action with Whiting above the 40 cm mark taken throughout the shallows from Belmont Bay to Nords Wharf while in the deeper water good numbers of Flathead and school Mulloway have been caught on the Samaki vibes in both 70-100 mm . Squid have been a little slow however this week’s prawn run will improve their numbers both in the channel and lake , squid jigs from 1.5-2.5 are getting the best results , while good numbers of Blue swimmer crabs are preferring the deeper waters . There have also been good numbers of Kingfish at the Swansea Bridge and Drop over but the weekend traffic is causing plenty of problems for anglers with both PWC’s and travelling vessels showing little respect for those fishing off the shore or in a boat , I watched several boats run over the top of baits been floated back to the bridge , it’s not that hard to go around someone who is fishing is .

Along the all of our beaches big numbers of Whiting have been taken on worms both Stockton and Belmont proving to be the pick and with the water temperature improving after a cold upwelling last week the numbers of Mulloway should be on the rise as we head for the next full moon on the 12th of January .

Offshore has certainly improved during the past month with Snapper up the 4 kg taken on the inshore reefs both Trag and Mulloway have also arrived in good numbers , those prepared to fish during the evening are having no trouble bagging out on both species , live bait working the best .

Out on the shelf we had a great start to the season back in October with both Blue and Striped marlin showing up early however its now a bit hit or miss with most waiting for better results but for those who prefer to shark fish it’s been a much better time with a number of big Tiger and Mako sharks caught off Swansea seems it won’t be long now summer is certainly here .

Wishing everyone a good and safe Xmas
